We built all of your top requests, and then some

GreenBooks started its life as a Mac and iPhone app, distributed through the App Store. Throughout the years, our users have repeatedly requested the same set of features. This new web-based version of GreenBooks is our effort to satisfy all of the top requests from our users, on an architecture that allows us to ship rapidly.

01

GreenBooks is now a web app

But we retained everything that made the native app great — the simplicity, the keyboard shortcuts, the speed. You can even install it on your phone and desktop just like a native app. The reason we moved to the web is to make everything on this list possible and future enhancements much faster to build.

02

Share it with your spouse

This is a feature we get asked about all the time. With GreenBooks for web, your login is a simple email and password — easily shareable with your other half.

03

Any device — Windows and Android too

For fifteen years the answer was “sorry, Mac and iPhone only.” Not anymore. Use GreenBooks on your office PC, Android phone, or iPad by just logging in on this very site. You can also install it on your phone and desktop so it looks and feels like any other app.

04

More reliable bank sync

We have rebuilt bank sync using Plaid so it is more reliable, and it covers the US and Canada. Because GreenBooks is web-based, if something goes wrong, it is also much easier for us to see what happened and fix it. Bank sync is still entirely optional.

05

Keep multiple books

Many of our users use GreenBooks for their business or organization as well. Multiple books are included at no extra cost — one account, as many books as you like.

06

No more sync issues

Because now, there is nothing to sync. Your data lives in the cloud and every device looks at it, so they can’t disagree.

07

Sortable transactions list

We’ve been asked for this so many times. Now you can sort your transactions list by date, payee, amount — however you like.

08

Per-account Breakdown

You can now filter the Breakdown report to just the accounts you choose.

09

Breakdown by any time period

In addition, you can pick any date range for your breakdown — month, quarter, year, or any custom range.

10

Finally, search transactions on your phone

Sorry this one took so long. Search is built in on your phone now — payee, amount, category.

Bring your history with you

It takes seconds to bring your data over from the Mac and iOS apps.

1

To get started, just sign up — we’ll walk you through both steps. It only takes a minute.

GreenBooks is private

Even though your data is moving to the cloud, keeping it private and secure is one of our highest priorities.

Never sold to anyone

Subscriptions are our only source of revenue. Your data is not part of the business.

Bank sync is optional

And if you choose to use bank sync, we never see your login credentials.

Export it, or delete it

Export to CSV or QIF whenever you want. Ask us to delete your account and it is gone.

One plan, reasonably priced

GreenBooks costs about as much as a latte a month, and we believe it will save you much more than that every month. Yes, we know: changing from a one-time payment to a subscription is a hard pill to swallow. But the one-time model is also why the original GreenBooks stopped improving — you can’t build a business if your customers pay you only once. By moving to a subscription, we’re able to keep the lights on and make GreenBooks better for you every day.

Thanks for supporting us — it’s what keeps an independent app independent.

Common questions

I found GreenBooks on the App Store — how is this version different?

This is the next generation of GreenBooks, rebuilt for the web, and it is where all new development is going. Being a web app costs you nothing you had before: your data is kept private and secure, and you can install it like a native app — on your phone, and on your Mac so it sits in the Dock.

What will happen to GreenBooks on the App Store?

It stays. We will keep maintaining it with bug fixes and keep it working with future versions of macOS and iOS. New features, though, are going into this web version.

I prefer GreenBooks running locally on my Mac. What is the privacy story here?

That is a fair thing to ask. We have built GreenBooks for web to be private and secure, and our business model is simple — you pay for the software, so we have no reason to do anything else with your data. But if you would rather your records never leave your Mac, the App Store version is still there, and still supported.

I already bought GreenBooks on the App Store. Do I have to pay again?

Yes — the web version is a separate subscription. That is what funds the ongoing work: a one-time purchase pays for an app once, which is how the original ended up going years without updates. A subscription is what lets us keep building.
